Palatial Way to End Our Stay

Hard to believe it’s to be our last day, but it promised to be a special one. Our guide got us up early in an attempt to beat the hordes visiting Peterhof Palace. It’s about an hour outside St. Petersburg. Along the way we got to see some of Russia’s most modern highways.

Not a Hermit in the Hermitage

We had been looking forward to this day as a potential high point of the trip (besides seeing Sekita and Frits of course). We were not disappointed. We went off on our own in the morning to get a good look at the Impressionists collection in a separate building. The easiest way to get there was via subway. That in itself was an experience. The nearest stop to our hotel was across the river, so we had to drop down via a series of escalators and people movers that were even longer than any we’ve experienced in either NYC or DC.

St. Petersburg (Russia?)

Really? We arrived in St. Petersburg after a 3 1/2 hour train ride from Helsinki, stepped off the train and immediately started stripping off layers. It’s 74 degrees when it should be in the 50s and fall. But hey, we don’t mind at all.
